Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1980 and Master of Physical Education in adaptive P.E. in 1983 from Springfield College. After teaching adaptive P.E. for 3 years, he moved south and joined the first Master’s level Physical Therapy class at the University of Miami. He graduated in 1988 and was named an APTA Mary McMillan Scholar that year. He completed his transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2008.
In 1989, Dr. Smith joined The Palm Beach Institute of Sports Medicine, a therapist owned outpatient Orthopedic/Sports Medicine practice located in Boca Raton, FL. Over the next 18 years his practice included the rehabilitation of athletes from the Olympic Diving team, WTA, ATP, PGA, MLB, and NFL, pre-professional ballet students, and local high school, college and recreational athletes. He became an Orthopedic Certified Specialist in 1999.
Dr. Smith joined the UM PT faculty in 2007 and teaches Medical Diagnostic Tests, Biophysical Agents, Advanced Clinical Practice of the Foot and Ankle, and Medical Pathology I. Dr. Smith also Co-Instructs Gross Anatomy in both the Physical Therapy and Medical programs.
