He currently holds the academic position of Associate Professor and serves as the Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Interventional Radiology.
Dr. Taslakian holds a remarkable suite of elite credentials, including board certifications from the American Board of Radiology (ABR), the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR), and the European Certification of Endovascular Specialists (EBIR-EV). This medical expertise is complemented by a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Health Law and Policy.
Recognized for his sustained leadership and academic achievements, Dr. Taslakian’s distinguished standing is evidenced by his prestigious titles as a Fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (FCIRSE) and a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA).
His clinical practice focuses on precision medicine and human connection, delivering tailored treatments designed to restore function and significantly improve patients' quality of life.
Dr. Taslakian completed his medical degree at the University of Damascus. His subsequent training included general surgery and diagnostic radiology at the American University of Beirut. He pursued an exceptionally broad, three-year fellowship track at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York, specializing in Thoracic Imaging, Advanced Cardiac Imaging, and Interventional Radiology. This comprehensive skillset uniquely equips him to provide complex, multi-system care.
A recognized pioneer in Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) for knee osteoarthritis, Dr. Taslakian’s research is widely published, spanning prospective clinical trials and meta-analyses. His extensive publication record also covers critical areas such as liver therapies, pulmonary embolism, trauma, and perioperative care.
Committed to advancing the field, Dr. Taslakian is a frequent invited speaker at major local, national, and international conferences, including the GEST Annual Meeting (New York), GEST MSK (Paris, France), VENTI (Tokyo, Japan), SIR (USA), and SIR EDGE (USA). Delivering over 20 lectures annually on topics like GAE, pulmonary embolism, and research infrastructure, he actively shapes the future of Interventional Radiology practice. He has further contributed as an Associate Program Director and Course Director for multiple conferences and served as a Guest Editor for national and international journals. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Taslakian’s teaching philosophy centers on building confident, evidence-based interventional radiologists through systematic skills acquisition, rigorous pre-procedural planning, and outcomes-driven scholarship. He is deeply committed to competency-based instruction in image-guided procedures, leveraging his unique three-year fellowship training in thoracic imaging, advanced cardiac imaging, and interventional radiology. This comprehensive background allows him to seamlessly integrate cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, and procedural technique at the bedside, in the angiography suite, and through simulation.
His curriculum design focuses on developing modular, case-based workshops that progress trainees from fundamentals (e.g., vascular access and imaging fluency) to advanced interventions such as visceral/trauma embolization, TIPS, and venous reconstructions. Dr. Taslakian emphasizes safe, standardized practice through meticulous instruction on pre-procedural checklists, anticoagulation and antithrombotic management, and post-procedural care areas he has formalized in published book chapters and peer-reviewed publications. This detailed instruction extends to the complex domain of Musculoskeletal and Pain Interventions, where he educates trainees on Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE), focusing on patient selection, sophisticated imaging road-mapping, and complication avoidance.
Beyond technical proficiency, Dr. Taslakian prioritizes the development of essential professional habits and scholarly acumen. He teaches the craft of precise procedure dictation, thorough documentation, and template design skills vital for reinforcing clinical reasoning and effective communication. He leads structured pathways for scholarly development, mentoring residents and fellows in study design and data capture, successfully translating everyday clinical questions into IR research. Furthermore, he champions Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Communication, training proceduralists in collaborative decision-making with different medical specialties.
Drawing on his graduate training in health law, he also strengthens informed consent practices and healthcare policy literacy in IR practice. Through all these domains, Dr. Taslakian’s goal is to graduate thoughtful proceduralists who combine technical precision with systems thinking, ethical clarity, and a strong scholarly voice. -
Research Interests
As a life-long Clinician-Researcher and Vice Chair of Research, Dr. Taslakian is dedicated to advancing image-guided therapies that maximize efficacy and minimize morbidity, improving patient outcomes through precise endovascular and percutaneous interventions.
He established the UiR Research Program which can be found at the website below. https://med.miami.edu/departments/interventional-radiology/research.
The UiR Research Program was created to drive innovation in interventional radiology, focusing on translating clinical questions into high-quality, publishable evidence. Dr. Taslakian actively mentors trainees and faculty across the full arc of scholarship, ensuring that the program contributes meaningful data to the field.
His research portfolio encompasses several high-impact areas, most notably Minimally Invasive Musculoskeletal Interventions. Dr. Taslakian is recognized as an international authority in Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) for knee osteoarthritis, spearheading prospective clinical studies that focus on patient selection, standardized outcomes, and the use of biomarker assessments to link vascular remodeling to symptom relief. This work extends to mapping hyperemia in other chronic pain conditions, such as those affecting the shoulder, elbow, and foot, alongside establishing consensus on safety and efficacy metrics to support broader clinical adoption.
A significant focus of Dr. Taslakian's practice and research involves complex hepatic and portal venous interventions, including the management of Portal Hypertension. His work in this area also extends to the management of Portal Vein Thrombosis (PVT), using image-guided thrombolysis and other recanalization techniques to restore flow.
Dr. Taslakian is also a highly accomplished leader in Clinical Trials and Health Services Research. He served as Site Principal Investigator (PI) for the landmark, NIH-funded PE-TRACT trial on pulmonary embolism, and actively works on developing pragmatic trial designs and advancing checklist-driven quality improvement to enhance reporting standards. His consistent goal across all these domains is to generate high-quality evidence that makes interventional radiology safer, more effective, and more accessible, rapidly translating technical innovation into clinical patient benefit. -
