I graduated from medical school at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil, when I had my first contact with experimental research working with animal models of congenital defects at Dr Lourenco Sbragia's laboratory, a pediatric and fetal surgeon. Following medical school I continued in his laboratory as a graduate student where I completed my PhD on the role of retinoic acid in lung vascularization in congenital diaphragmatic hernia before moving to the USA to continue my clinical training. I completed my General Pediatrics and Neonatal Medicine Training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital where I was mentored by Drs. Alan Jobe and Suhas Kallapur on my research on the effects of chorioamnionitis to lung and brain development and injury using large animal models. I continued at Cincinnati as a research fellow and then as junior faculty continuing my research on antenatal inflammation and antenatal corticosteroids funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I moved to the University of Miami in 2018 where I continue to work on the mechanisms of brain and lung injury associated with prenatal inflammation and mechanical ventilation.
