Biography
Dr. Asma Siddiqi Aftab is a Research Assistant Professor and Director of Community Health Division, at the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her work revolves around Public and Community Health as well as Research on evidence based innovative strategies pertaining to substance abuse Addiction. She is a Principal Investigator of the Federally funded Area Health Education Center (AHEC) grant for training and expanding the educational experiences of health and allied health professionals for primary health care in the underserved communities of South Florida. Dr. Aftab is also Principal Investigator and Director of AHEC tobacco training and cessation program funded by the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida (TFF). As part of the grant tobacco intervention training is being conducted in the medical school, residency programs and patients of both hospital systems; UHealth and JHS are being offered comprehensive cessation services partnering with the clinical departments as well as Hospitals for admitted patients. More recently Dr. Aftab received an opioid training and prevention grant from the State Department of Children and Families (DCF). The grant aims to train Health and Allied health professionals on opioid addiction management and treatment as well as community education od opioid addiction prevention.
As part of her mentoring work Dr. Aftab has mentored and employed numerous UM students who were able to join the Miller School of Medicine given their research experience and published work. She has done several heath and Allied health providers training in tobacco and opioid. She has presented her work at number of National and International conferences as well as publishing her research.
Dr. Aftab has been collaborating with several community physicians, mental healthcare organizations, free clinics, FQHCs, homeless shelters, County Department of Health, non-profit organizations as well as health fairs in Miami Dade County.
Dr Aftab has a medical degree from University of Karachi, Pakistan. After few years working for prestigious International Healthcare organizations in Pakistan, funded by USAID, she was able to get some valuable experiences while observing health systems and medical education at other developing and developed countries like Haiti, Bangladesh, UAE and Greece. She came to USA for pursuing master’s in public health degree from Top ranked Gillings School of Public Health at the University of Noth Carolina Chapel Hill. To enhance her tobacco teaching and research skills, Dr Aftab has taken tobacco treatment specialist certification from the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey Tobacco Dependence Program which is a world-renowned center for tobacco addiction research and teaching.
Dr Aftab is the first faculty member from the UM Medical School to be awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholar award from the US Department of State for UAE at the University of Sharjah for establishing medical school tobacco curriculum and to conduct tobacco education workshops for Primary care Physicians. -
