Biography
Currently I am working at the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a research and teaching faculty. My work here revolves around community health and wellness research. I am closely involved in training and expanding the educational experiences of health and allied health professionals for primary health care in the underserved communities of South Florida as part of the Area Health Education Center Network (AHEC) since last 10 years. Since last 12 years I am directing a tobacco training and cessation program in the medical school, residency programs and hospital system here at the University of Miami funded under AHEC by the Florida Department of Health. To enhance my teaching skills, I have taken a certified tobacco treatment specialist certification from the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey Tobacco Dependence Program which is a world-renowned center for tobacco addiction research and teaching.
At the time of graduation from medical school like any other medical student, I had set my eyes on a hi-tech clinical specialty. It was during my internship in one of the largest public teaching hospitals in Pakistan that I got a glimpse of the enormity of public health problems. Later, these impressions were further fortified while working as a medical officer in the department of community health sciences at the Aga Khan Medical University. The health policies are impractical, lack foresight and are devoid of initiatives towards the preventive aspects. These and several other observations drew me to a career in Public Health. My six years of experience as a primary health care provider and later as a public health professional in Pakistan had given me the insight and motivation to take an advanced training in the field of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After graduating I was able to get some valuable experiences to observe health systems and medical education at other developing and developed countries like Haiti, Bangladesh, and Greece. -
