Biography
Dr. Maharaj is a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, in the department of Ophthalmology, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. He specializes in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Maharaj migrated to Long Island in 1995 after completing the O’Level examination. He then attended University of Stony Brook, Stony Brook, NY with a Degree in Biochemistry with honors and Anthropology in 2001. Next, he completed an MD and PhD at Harvard University, Boston, MA, 2009 with a PhD in Experimental Pathology, investigating blood vessel pathology. He then completed an internal medicine internship followed by ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Tx from 2009-2013. He then completed a clinical fellowship in glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Palm Beach Gardens, FL in 2014. Since then he has been a faculty member in the department of Ophthalmology, at the BPEI Palm Beach Campus. He has authored multiple papers, has served on several state and international committees including the Florida Society of Ophthalmology leadership committee, Ophthalmology Society of the West Indies leadership committee, Florida Glaucoma Society Leadership committee. He won the prestigious Florida Society of Ophthalmology Michael. R. Redmond Outstanding Young Ophthalmologist Leadership Award in 2018. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Maharaj is one of the fellowship supervising attendings for two glaucoma fellows at the University of Miami, Palm Beach campus. He is active in the clinical and surgical education of these fellows. To date he has trained 16 fellows and is passionate about training the next generation of eye surgeons and scientists. He is also the program director for medical student education in the department of Ophthalmology at the Palm Beach Campus and has regularly mentored and supervised rotating 3rd and 4th year medical students. He has delivered many invited lectures and scientific presentations at national and international symposia. He has mentored scientific studies for several trainees including medical students, fellows and a post-doctoral fellow. He is passionate about teaching ophthalmologists as well in the Caribbean and has teamed with ophthalmologists there to deliver lectures and surgical and clinical training. -
Research Interests
Dr. Maharaj has taught and published in glaucoma diagnosis and management. His research interests include vascular dynamics in glaucoma, and outcomes of glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has delivered many scientific symposia at national and international conferences. He has published 20 original scientific papers, abstracts, and book chapters. -
