Biography
As the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at Jackson Health System and the Lung Center Transplant Intensive Care Unit at the University of Miami, Andres Pelaez, MD, is dedicated to advancing the care and outcomes of lung transplant patients. Actively involved in patient selection and management, Andres Pelaez is a key leader in ensuring access to lifesaving procedures for high-risk candidates.
Dr. Pelaez ’s primary research interests include identifying risk factors that predispose lung transplant recipients to primary graft dysfunction—the leading cause of mortality following transplantation—and uncovering strategies to optimize outcomes for transplant patients. These efforts align with the University of Miami Lung Transplant Program’s mission to innovate and expand access to lung transplantation.
Our transplant program has pioneered approaches to transplant sensitized patients, developed protocols for COVID-19-related lung transplants, and optimized ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) strategies. These initiatives reflect a commitment to delivering cutting-edge care and advancing the field of lung transplantation.
