Teaching Interests
Of all the different facets of my job, the part that I enjoy the most is teaching the medical students, residents, and fellows in the operating rooms, clinics, emergency room, classrooms, and via online lectures. I have frequently staffed the residents on their very first intraocular surgery, and it fills me with such pride and joy to see them master surgery in such a short period of time, becoming confident and efficient third year residents and fellows. To be honest, and I am sure that my own mentors would agree, I probably learn just about as much from the residents as they do from me. I am certainly a better surgeon and teacher for it, learning how to anticipate and handle unexpected and challenging situations. Even though I live over 120 miles away, I enjoy driving over and staffing the residents’ surgeries three or more days a month. -
Research Interests
I had a special interest in cataract surgery and corneal diseases early on in my career; indeed, I had probably committed to the anterior segment of the eye even before I had started residency. After completing an anterior segment fellowship that mainly focused on corneal diseases, cataracts, and refractive surgeries, I practiced for a few years, with a primary focus on cataract and corneal surgeries while working at a large public hospital. After trying to treat severe corneal pathologies in an underprivileged population, I wanted to conduct research and learn more about how I could help treat blinding conditions that are oftentimes considered incurable. My two fellowships and my prior work experience have given me a well-balanced understanding of the diagnoses and management options for a broad spectrum of anterior segment pathologies.
As a clinician-scientist, I have used my real-life clinical patient scenarios to stimulate research questions. Some of my recently published articles on the cost-effectiveness of antimicrobial prophylaxis in cataract and corneal surgeries arose after caring for patients with infections and having several stimulating academic discussions with physicians at Bascom Palmer and abroad. I have presented my research in regional, national, and multiple international meetings and won several awards. I also serve in the editorial board of journals and enjoy frequently reviewing new journal articles submitted to different journals. -
