Biography
Dr. Alexis Powell is a Clinical Assistant Professor and an expert in Internal Medicine and HIV/AIDS, specializing in providing care to underserved communities. After earning her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine, she completed her residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and has since been committed to increasing healthcare access for vulnerable populations.
Throughout her career, Dr. Powell has provided care in a variety of settings—from comprehensive medical centers to mobile vans—to patients across numerous Miami-Dade neighborhoods. Her work included serving as a medical advisor for a community-based HIV disparities pilot and a co-investigator for an HIV prevention project. This vast experience, which included a medical directorship at a large shelter in Overtown, has given her a unique expertise in adapting medical care to the specific needs of individuals, families, and communities.
As a dedicated educator, Dr. Powell mentors MD/MPH students as a Longitudinal Clinical Educator and serves as a supervising attending on inpatient Internal Medicine teaching wards, in the ambulatory HIV clinic, and at a student-run Department of Community Service (DOCS) clinic in Little Haiti. Her impactful work has been recognized with numerous publications and awards, including the 2025 UMMSM Excellence in Medical Student Teaching Award and the LeMoyne College Alumni Dr. Carl Thomas ’65 Spirit Award. -
