Biography
Alexander M. McKinney IV, MD, is the Chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. McKinney had previously served 26 years at the University of Minnesota, rising to become a Professor. Dr. McKinney began his time at the University of Minnesota in 1994 as a medical student and continued his education through residency and 18 months of Fellowship in Neuroradiology before becoming a faculty. During this period, he underwent additional training at Sick Kids in Toronto in the realm of pediatric neuroradiology, and became the Division Director of Neuroradiology. Dr. McKinney has gathered a breadth of experience through partnerships with Hennepin Healthcare and the Minneapolis VA, in addition to the University hospitals, leading to many publications on diverse patient populations and conditions, including stroke (he published many seminal works on CT perfusion), catheter and CT angiography for vascular injury, and later encephalopathic syndromes. This foundation, along with a passion for academic medicine, culminated in Dr. McKinney becoming the Department of Radiology’s Vice-Chair of Research, Informatics, and Innovation. In this role, he helped build a research support system and mentorship within the department. He also served as a Vice Chair of Faculty Development and Mentoring and co-chaired the Medical School’s Diversity and Inclusion efforts. “It took many years and more than just me to do, but we built a master mentors program, coordinated support resources, and the thing that made me feel the best was watching other people get promoted because of the effect it has had on them as well as our ability to recruit faculty,” said McKinney. “What really makes me feel secure that I contributed something valuable is this work. We’ve had more promotions in the last three years than in the previous 10-15." Dr. McKinney helped create the Center for Clinical Imaging Research (CCIR) at the University of Minnesota and served as medical director and MRI-CT safety director for CCIR and the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research. Before leaving, Dr. McKinney helped formed the recently funded Center for Radiology Research Resources (CRRR). Through CRRR, reads, radiology expertise, and recommendations were woven into all phases of research at the U of M and M Health Fairview from the design phase of grant submissions all the way to the post-approval phase of clinical trials. As Department Chair at the University of Miami, Dr. McKinney now focuses on spreading the practice of academic radiology throughout southern Florida. These efforts include improving both faculty wellness and diversity on the “non-clinical” side and combining that with creating a culture that has a passion for clinical excellence married to research and innovation. Dr. McKinney also sees an opportunity in using informatics to demonstrate radiology’s value in the care pathway to quantify radiologists’ effect on patients’ outcomes and “value”. -

Teaching Interests
My approach to teaching and learning is particularly focused on enhancing the academic developing of radiology/imaging trainees, although I have worked with trainees from various departments, including primary care and subspecialties. This approach combines didactic training (traditional “viewbox” or workstation interpretation) and a gradual progression to why research in imaging aids both our clinical excellence in being impactful on patient care, as well as quality. Thus, I have served in a capacity as a teacher to the Medical Students, Residents, and fellows in Radiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, ENT, Psychiatry, Oral Surgery, and Pediatrics. This has led to my collaboration and co-authorship within these (and other) departments across the SOM (School of Medicine). Of note, other important sub points that I have recently focused on outside of stressing excellence in clinical-didactic teaching, research, and quality are now informatics-related, including clinical decision support (CDS) and appropriateness use criteria (AUC) of imaging, as well as correlating “actionable imaging findings” with outcomes. This more recent focus is to help trainees, co-authors, and others in my field focus on how imaging reimbursement is increasingly being challenged because of duplication or overuse of imaging, or a lack of an evidenced based approach to use of imaging, which is undergoing increasing scrutiny from CMS. Hence, many of my more recent invited lectures or research presentations internationally and domestically are either: a) regarding how to convert imaging reports into actionable findings with diagnostic codes (in order to correlate with appropriateness and outcomes), or b) relate to clinical research of nonspecific symptoms and presentations for which imaging is ordered to “rule out” a disorder, which is increasingly challenged for reimbursement (e.g. many recent papers on encephalopathic syndromes). -
Research Interests
Regarding research, Dr. McKinney has authored over 125 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 3 books, and several chapters. He also holds patents in informatics-related endeavors. He sits on several committees within the American College of Radiology (ACR), American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), and Radiologic Society of North American (RSNA) regarding clinical practice parameters, scientific committees, and quality/safety related to modalities such as MRI, having composed or revised the clinical parameters for 7T MRI, CT perfusion, CT angiography, CT myelography, and others. -
