The Men's Health Bootcamp is a multi-disciplinary effort designed to address a range of men’s health issues such as erectile dysfunction, hormone replacement therapy and Peyronie’s disease. This comprehensive course will provide an in-depth evaluation of these conditions while also emphasizing preventative medicine and strategies to maintain long-term health and quality of life for men.

Needs Assessment

  • Since there is no defined men’s health curriculum in medical school or residency, our learners need to be adequately prepared to address the multi-disciplinary concerns of men 
  • We should measure competency and confidence across learners in dealing with complex men’s health issues such as erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease 
  • Teach trainees how to code services, document notes, treatments, and diagnoses, ensuring healthcare providers are reimbursed for services rendered

Course Objectives

Learning Objectives (Day 1)

Day 1 will focus on participating in the outpatient clinic learning about Peyronie’s disease, erectile dysfunction, orgasmic dysfunction.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Diagnose, work up and manage patients with Peyronie’s disease, and erectile dysfunction
  • Recognize and review the differential diagnosis of patients with Peyronies Disease, and erectile dysfunction
  • Analyze and critique different solutions for medical management of patients with Peyronies disease, and erectile dysfunction
  • Appraise and examine consequences of different treatment plans leading to a care recommendation for patients with Peyronies disease, and erectile dysfunction
  • Understand how to manage complications and side effects associated with different treatment options for men with Peyronie’s disease such as intralesional injections, surgeries such as plication, grafting and penile implants
  • Prepare and set up, as well as perform standard clinic procedures, and manage complications related to vasectomy, testosterone pellet insertion, intracavernosal Xiaflex injection.

Learning Objectives (Day 2)

This portion of the training program is designed to provide the learner with hands-on experience for the use of Penile Doppler in thoroughly diagnosing male sexual dysfunction.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the science and details of duplex ultrasound and the clinical application to help your patients understand the etiology of erectile dysfunction
  • Understand the evaluation of characteristics of the penile plaque (calcified vs non-calcified, size of the plaque, location(s) of the plaque from the coronal sulcus)
  • Understand curvature assessment with goniometer, dosing protocol with intracavernosal injections to obtain a maximal erection, use of phenylephrine / irrigation to return the penis to a flaccid state)
  • Evaluate how the characteristics of the plaque will influence treatment options for men Peyronie’s disease. The participant is expected to learn penile anatomy as well as understand Doppler ultrasound: normal patterns (flaccid and dynamic color-Doppler)
  • Provides trainees with the knowledge, skills, and training they need to document, bill, code, and obtain insurance authorization for office procedures such as penile Duplex and Xiaflex injection.

Faculty Members

Bruce Kava

Bruce R. Kava, M.D.

Dr. Kava is a Professor of Urology and the Director of Men’s Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. With over 20 years at the university, he has served as Chief of Urology at the Miami Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and as Interim Chairman of the Urology Department from 2010 to 2012.

He earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his Urology Residency at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Kava further specialized with a Urological Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and holds a master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Investigation from the University of Miami.

Specializing in Urologic Oncology, Sexual Dysfunction, and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Dr. Kava has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, including one on Essential Communication Skills for Urologists in the American Urological Association (AUA) Core Curriculum. He is currently the President-elect of the American Society of Men’s Health and has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sexual Medicine and the Board of Directors for the Florida Urological Association.

Thomas A Masterson III MD

Thomas A. Masterson III M.D.

Dr. Masterson is a Board-Certified Urologist who completed a fellowship in Male Reproductive and Sexual Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2020. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and reviews for journals such as the Journal of Sexual Medicine and Sexual Medicine Reviews.

Active in professional organizations, Dr. Masterson is a member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) and serves on its Young Members Committee. He also chairs the Social Media and Communications Committee for the Society for Male Reproductive Urology.

Dr. Masterson sees patients at the Desai Sethi Urology Institute and operates at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. His expertise includes male reproductive medicine, Peyronie’s disease, testosterone management, erectile dysfunction, and penile prosthetics.

Laura Ann Horodyski

Laura Horodyski, M.D.

Dr. Horodyski is a Professor of Urology and the Associate Program Director of the Urology Residency Program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She completed her medical degree at the University of Cincinnati and her urology residency at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Further enhancing her expertise, she completed a clinical fellowship in trauma and reconstructive surgery at Temple University Hospital before returning to the University of Miami Health System, Desai Sethi Urology Institute as faculty.

Dr. Horodyski provides exceptional medical and surgical care for a wide range of urologic issues. Her clinical interests include treating complications from cancer treatment, urethral stricture, male stress urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), congenital and acquired urologic anomalies, and neurogenic bladder. Additionally, she is an LGBTQ-affirming provider, committed to delivering inclusive and compassionate care.

Emad Ibrahim, M.D., HCLD

Emad Ibrahim, M.D., HCLD (ABB)

Dr. Ibrahim is an Associate Professor of Clinical Urology and Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Specializing in Andrology and Sexual Medicine, he serves as the Director of the Clinical Andrology Laboratory and the Sperm Cryopreservation Program at the Desai Sethi Urology Institute. Dr. Ibrahim is a recognized expert in managing sexual and reproductive dysfunction in men with spinal cord injury and leads the weekly penile Doppler clinic at the Desai Sethi Medical Center, where he excels in diagnosing various etiologies of erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, and penile plaque characterization.

Dr. Ibrahim is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Urological Association, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology. He has also been invited to serve as an expert member of the Committee on Neurological Disorders and Sexual Dysfunction by the International Society for Sexual Medicine. His research is currently funded by the NIH and the U.S. Department of Defense, highlighting his significant contributions to the field.

Libert Ramos DNP

Libert Ramos D.N.P.

Libert Ramos is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice and over 8 years of experience in general urology, male reproductive health, and sexual medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He sees patients at the Desai Sethi Urology Institute and the Lennar Foundation Medical Center, where he performs various office procedures, including Testopel insertion, intramuscular testosterone administration, and intracavernosal injection training. Additionally, he is an expert in the preoperative and postoperative management of surgical patients.

He is an active member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the American Urological Association. He is also a peer-reviewed author and a panelist at the annual instructional course on "How to Start and Build a Successful Andrology Practice" at the American Urological Association meeting. His extensive expertise and dedication make him a valuable asset to the field of urology and men's health.

Training Locations

Desai Sethi Urology Institute
Desai Sethi Urology Institute (DSUI) - Located at 1150 NE 14th street, Miami FL, the DSUI is the main outpatient clinic location for the fellowship. All outpatient clinical care for the Men’s Health training program will take place in the DSUI. The DSUI contains 16 recently renovated clinic rooms where the all faculty see new and follow up patients and perform procedures, including penile duplex ultrasound, in office cystoscopy, testopel, Xiaflex injections, vasectomy and other small procedures. The DSUI also houses the andrology lab where we perform semen analysis, sperm cryopreservation, testicular biopsies, and sperm DNA fragmentation assays. This DSUI clinical office is open 5 days a week.
