Message from the Chair

Physiology and Biophysics

Welcome to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Physiology and Biophysics, where our mission is to push the frontier of our knowledge on the organization and function of the human organism. We are also committed to training the next generation of physicians and scientists.

As the original discipline that defined modern medicine, we embrace:

  • The complexity of the biological systems and strive to understand them in depth, using fundamental, curiosity-driven research
  • Examining multiple levels of organization, from molecules to cells and organisms, and rely on model organisms, from worms to mammals and human-derived platforms.
  • Precise, physics-based and computational techniques to achieve a deep, mechanistic understanding of biology down to atoms and mathematical models.

We apply this approach to interrogate human disease, from deciphering its molecular root causes to understanding how pathology affects the function of organs systems and behavior. We work in collaboration with clinicians and drug developers to translate basic knowledge into better treatments, with the ultimate goal of helping patients. Historically, our department has excelled in understanding neural system function and pathology. As we look at our new chapter and expand our infrastructure and faculty, we are committed to an unwavering focus on cutting-edge research, exemplary teaching and dedicated to excellence in scholarly work and research.
