At the University of Miami Health System through a multidisciplinary approach with our colleagues in oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology we offer a wide range of sarcoma treatments to help patients receive the care that’s right for them. Sarcoma can cause tumors in your bones or connective tissue in any location throughout your body. In the past, surgery was the only option to remove sarcomas. However, newer minimally invasive procedures such as ablation and embolization are available to treat sarcomas percutaneously or endovascularly non-surgical treatment options for patients who cannot undergo or do not wish to undergo surgery. These minimally invasive procedures are performed by Interventional Radiologists – physicians who specialize in image guided minimally invasive procedures. Ablation therapy uses extreme heat or cold to destroy sarcoma cancer cells while leaving healthy cells undamaged. At times tumor can metastasize to liver and lung. The lesions may also be targeted with ablation. The liver lesions in certain types of metastatic sarcoma such as Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) respond well to intraarterial therapy of embolization. This involves the direct treatment through the arteries in the liver to decrease blood supply to the tumors.
