International Medicine Institute Medical Training Programs

The International Medicine Institute (IMI) mission is to promote the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine internationally as a global leader in education and training of the next generation of medical healthcare professionals, in the advancement of medicine, innovation and technology as a premier academic medical center and a true medical destination that offers quality healthcare services.

The International Medicine Institutes believe education is an essential component of healthcare. When institutions equip physicians with the proper training and tools, those doctors develop the capacity and are equipped to conduct cutting-edge research and deliver life-saving care. We are devoted to providing world-class education programs, and excellence in medical education and training to healthcare professionals and physicians from around the globe. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is currently the only academic medical center in South Florida with international reach. The institution is also ranked in the top third among U.S. medical schools for research funding awarded.

We offer a suite of educational and training programs, which include: (the bolded text will link to page)

  • The William J. Harrington Medical Training Programs is housed within the International Medicine Institute (IMI), the international component of University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine. Through the world-renowned William J. Harrington Medical Training Programs, it offers a wide range of opportunities, including as follows:

    1. The Elective Program Medical Graduates for international medical graduates and Medical Student Program for medical students for individualized options for advanced educational experience, which offers clinical rotations in general medicine, its subspecialties and in other areas of medicine. The duration ranges between one and three months and is in effect year-around.
    2. The Residency Program in Internal Medicine, now in its fifth decade, provides state-of-the-art medical education to students and physicians across Latin America and in the Caribbean. Following program completion, participants return to their home countries to practice and establish themselves as leaders in their medical communities.
    3. The Virtual Observership Program which is now being offered in several medical specialties. The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has precluded the in-person participation of international observers due through travel lock-down and local social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus and promote wellbeing. Our mission is to continue our commitment to education and training by establishing new alternates through “virtual rounds.” Through a single sign-on platform that is HIPAA compliant, users have access to an interactive live e-learning experience which simulates the in-presence observer experience.
  • The Eberhard Grube International Interventional Structural Heart Disease Fellowship Program at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital (UM/JMH) is directed by Eduardo de Marchena, MD with the support of Drs. Carlos Alfonso, Pedro Cox, Michael Dyal, Alan Schob, Cesar Mendoza, and Alexander Ferreira. The fellowship is comprised of a one-year program, which functions as an integral component of the subspecialty programs in cardiology, interventional cardiology and the categorical residency program in internal medicine. The program is designed to provide training in structural heart disease procedures for fellows with prior cardiac catheterization and interventional cardiology experience.
