Message from the Director

Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute

Joshua M. Hare, M.D.Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI) at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, one of the nation’s leading institutes in translating findings in the laboratory to the clinical setting.

ISCI is a ground breaking scientific enterprise that is dedicated to finding the answers to the most important basic questions in life science today: What are the properties that allow stem cells not only to differentiate into any cell type in the body, but also to reprogram other cells and repair their damaged tissue?

In the quest to develop new therapies for the currently incurable diseases, ISCI provides infrastructure, laboratory resources and expertise for primary investigators that are involved in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Close collaboration and cross-interaction across disciplines fosters a synergy among physician-scientists that spring forth novel ideas to overcome challenges in the lab while simultaneously developing new research initiatives.

Already within its first three years, ISCI’s translational pipeline is leading the nation in research for cardiovascular stem cell therapies. Four phase I/II clinical trials may represent the largest cohort of cardiac patients in the nation receiving adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). ISCI’s physician-scientists are dedicated to rapidly applying knowledge of stem cell biology to advance therapies for hard-to-treat diseases in an ethical and rigorous manner.

This website is designed to provide a general understanding of the research conducted across ISCI’s seven disease platforms: blood, bond and skin, cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes and nervous system. On behalf of ISCI’s members and partners thank you for visiting this site.
