Welcome to the Center for Translation Sleep and Circadian Sciences (TSCS). We are excited to be a part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami (UM).
Dear Friends,
I hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy and safe. We are thrilled to share our work, values, and resources with you.
The overarching goal of TSCS is to advance the understanding and practice of sleep/circadian sciences through innovation in research and training. It will also provide core infrastructure support that will increase the capacity of investigators affiliated with the Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Public Health, Medicine, and Pulmonology to develop, implement, and evaluate state-of-the-science sleep and circadian research. It will support trans-disciplinary collaborations among biological, medical, behavioral, social, and public health scientists in the area of sleep and circadian biology aimed at improving cardio-metabolic and brain health.
One critical aspect of the center is the implementation of sponsored training programs for junior faculty, graduate/postgraduate researchers, medical residents, and medical school trainees. Another key aspect of the center is the provision of congruent mentored learning opportunities to fellows in sleep and circadian sciences. The center is uniquely positioned to support collaborative initiatives to improve cardiovascular and brain health outcomes, particularly among individuals in minoritized communities. Another distinctive attribute is the inclusion of several investigators with established records of transformational, stakeholder-engaged achievements that undergird equitable partnerships with community health centers, places of worship, barbershops, beauty salons and civic organizations within UM’s catchment area.
The center will also serve as an important hub to develop educational materials that increase awareness of the importance of adequate sleep and circadian health in Miami’s diverse communities. Furthermore, the center will be the home to a new, state-of-the-science circadian laboratory that will address mechanisms of disparities in cardiovascular and brain health, which are linked to disrupted sleep and circadian misalignment.
Thank you very much, and we keenly look forward to serving you and the community!
On behalf of the TSCS Team,
Girardin Jean-Louis, Ph.D.
