Message from the Director

Center for Translational Sleep and Circadian Sciences
Welcome to the Center for Translation Sleep and Circadian Sciences (TSCS). We are excited to be a part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami (UM).

Dear Friends,

Girardin Jean-Louis

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy and safe. We are thrilled to share our work, values, and resources with you.

The overarching goal of TSCS is to advance the understanding and practice of sleep and circadian sciences through innovation in research and training. It will also provide core infrastructure support that increases the capacity of investigators affiliated with the Departments of Neurology, Psychiatry, Public Health, Medicine, and Pulmonology to develop, implement, and evaluate state-of-the-science sleep and circadian research. The center supports transdisciplinary collaboration among biological, medical, behavioral, social, and public health scientists in the area of sleep and circadian biology aimed at improving cardiometabolic and brain health.

One critical aspect of the center is the implementation of sponsored training programs for junior faculty, graduate and postgraduate researchers, medical residents, and medical school trainees. Another key aspect of the center is the provision of mentored learning opportunities for fellows in sleep and circadian sciences. The center is well positioned to support collaborative initiatives to improve cardiovascular and brain health outcomes, particularly among populations experiencing a higher burden of sleep-related health conditions. Another distinctive attribute is the inclusion of several investigators with established records of collaborative research and community partnerships with health centers, places of worship, barbershops, beauty salons, and civic organizations within UM’s catchment area.

The center will also serve as an important hub for developing educational materials that increase awareness of the importance of adequate sleep and circadian health in communities across Miami. Furthermore, the center will be home to a new state-of-the-science circadian laboratory that will investigate mechanisms contributing to differences in cardiovascular and brain health outcomes linked to disrupted sleep and circadian misalignment.

Thank you very much, and we look forward to serving you and the community.

On behalf of the TSCS Team,

Girardin Jean-Louis, Ph.D.
