Application Process

All individuals with a strong background education in biology, biochemical, or biological sciences are eligible to submit an application—having taken courses in anatomy and physiology is advantageous. 

Competitive candidates will have the following:

• Medical degrees (M.D. or M.B.B.S.) from U.S. or foreign institu­tions
• Bach­elor’s degree in experimental sciences encompassing any area of biological or biochemical sciences, with the equivalent of a 3.5 or higher GPA
• Cumulative GPA of 3.5 and above (or U.S. equivalent) in their undergraduate degree, with relevant work experience.
• Medical degree students with a United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) score above 245 is preferred
  
  

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the following deadlines. International applicants should apply early no later than April 15th.

BioMed Centralized Application Service (BiomedCAS) welcomes applicants to use a single online application and one set of materials to apply to multiple biomedical science programs at participating schools. All applicants must apply online through BiomedCAS.

Application Fee Waivers

Qualified applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with documented membership in approved programs or demonstrated financial need (those who fall below the federal poverty guidelines) may request an application fee waiver. Please note that waivers are very limited. Apply early.

ALERT: Due to COVID, please do NOT send any documents to the University of Miami by mail. 

ALL official academic records – including degree and non-degree programs, community college, and English language programs – from all previously attended colleges and universities must be sent electronically from each institution to BiomedCAS.

Applicants with Canadian transcripts with French language or grading systems should follow the international transcript instructions below.

Electronic transcripts are required. Follow the BiomedCAS instructions for submitting your transcripts through Credential Solutions, Parchment, or National Student Clearinghouse. Institutions that have not converted to digital records can mail transcripts to:

Applicants who have attended institutions outside the U.S. and Canada must submit all official transcripts, mark sheets, and a photocopy of their diploma(s) (with English translation when applicable). All post-secondary/university transcripts must be submitted with a course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA from the World Education Service using the special WES CAS website. Select BiomedCAS from the drop-down menu on the WES website, which provides country-specific document requirements. Your evaluation will be electronically sent to BiomedCAS.

Official transcripts with translation and credential evaluation must be received before an application is reviewed.

International students whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Test scores must be less than two years old. This requirement is waived for applicants who have completed 30 consecutive credits at the university level, where English was the language of instruction, or for those who passed Step 1 of the USMLEs. 

TOEFL: When registering for the test, please request that your score be sent to BiomedCAS, institution code 5815. The minimum score is 80.

IELTS: When registering for the test, please request that your score be sent to the University of Miami, institution code 4862. The minimum score is 6.5.

Your personal essay gives you the opportunity to submit a narrative discussing your past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. Enter your essay in the “Supporting Information” section of your BiomedCAS application.

All applicants must submit a complete, up-to-date resume/CV that includes all employment, research experience, community service, education, and academic or professional honors. Be sure to detail all experience related to the discipline you are applying to – including research experience, training, education, or related qualifications – with bulleted summaries.

You must submit a minimum of three (and a maximum of five) letters of recommendation from those who are best able to assess your ability to be successful in a graduate degree program. Ideally, your recommenders are recent researchers or employers in related research or scientific field. Recommenders should write a letter that is specific to the discipline for which they are applying. Form letters and recommendations written for medical school applications contribute little to your application and are strongly discouraged. You will be asked for your recommenders’ contact information in BioMedCAS, and they will be sent an online form to complete via email.
