The Division of Digestive Health and Liver Diseases at the University of Miami are at the cutting edge of basic, translational, and clinical research across the spectrum of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Members of our division include international leaders in research in inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease/liver transplant, and national leaders in gastrointestinal motility, pancreatic disease, and cancer genetics. The strength of our research programs is derived from the collaborative research between faculty, fellows, post-docs, graduate students, and medical students within the division and with members of the Sylvester Cancer Center, Microbiology and Immunology, Human Genomics, Cell Biology, and Public Health Sciences, along with external collaborations both nationally and internationally.

The division is home to an internationally renowned clinical research program in inflammatory bowel disease which includes translational efforts to identify genotypic/phenotypic correlations, epidemiologic risk factors, optimize methods for colon cancer surveillance, and offer novel therapies for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The Crohn’s and Colitis Center has established a database and biorepository of over 3,000 unique patients with detailed clinical information and patient samples to enable basic science investigations and to identify candidates for clinical trials of both conventional and novel medical therapies. Our team has many open clinical trials, including investigator-initiated studies and the latest industry-sponsored studies, providing options for patients who fail conventional treatment. Most recently, our faculty has embarked on diet intervention studies in patients with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis.

Our division also includes international leaders in clinical and health services research in chronic liver disease and liver transplantation. Our division investigators include members of multi-center cohort studies, multi-center clinical trials, and NIH-sponsored cohort studies and clinical trials. Members of our division are leading researchers in healthcare disparities for patients with chronic liver disease and liver cancer, and are leading investigators in research focused on improving the system of liver transplantation and liver allocation.

We have included further information on our faculty to the left, which includes an outline of their current research efforts at the University.
