The Office of Research Information Management (ORIM) supports the University of Miami community by providing systems to facilitate research administration. These systems are intended to minimize the amount of time end-users require to complete processes associated with research-related activities. ORIM deploys, manages, and trains users on applications such as InfoEd (Proposal Tracking/Development& Animal Protocol Management), Topaz GRANITE (Web Animal Orders and Animal Facility Management), Velos (Clinical Trials Management), and the Research Reporting System (Sponsored Programs Financial Information).

Welcoming new ORIM & Velos team member, Kanchan Sakhrani
August 11th, 2008– Kanchan Sakhrani has joined the Office of Research Information Management (ORIM) as a Project Manager. She has bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Miami and has been with UM since 2001, starting with the Center for Family Studies. Kanchan joins us today from the School of Nursing where she was a Senior Research Analyst for NIH sponsored studies led by El Centro. She will be working on the Velos eResearch team and focus on assisting study staff and departments as they adopt and use the software. We’re very fortunate to have Kanchan as she has an abundant amount of experience working with coordinators, PIs, and staff on study operations, electronic data collection, and quality assurance, plus she is already an experienced Velos user. These skills should prove to be great resources for our current and future Velos customers and help us further scale our ability to deploy these tools and related services.
Kanchan will be located in Sewell 2017a and can be reached at 305-243-2314/3896 or ksakhrani@med.miami.edu.

Update Session on Velos eResearch Deployment with Demonstration
May 09, 2008– Late last year UM acquired the Velos eResearch clinical research management system as a central resource for clinical research studies. This deployment is part of three major initiatives in the Office of Research to improve our ability to initiate and manage clinical research efforts and simplify as many of the supporting processes as possible. On May 21st, the Office of Research Information Management will host an information session. This session will give an update on Velos deployment status and rollout, process transformation, overview of functionality with a brief demonstration, and make the project team available to answer questions. This is a great opportunity for investigators, departments and study coordinators to learn more about Velos and how it is and will be used.

Neurology becomes first clinical department to adopt Velos eResearch for tracking clinical research studies
May 5th, 2008 – With the combined efforts of Chairman Dr. Ralph Sacco, MD, Edison Sabala, MPH, Director of Research Administration & Operations, Julie Steele, Associate Director of Research for Clinical Trials, the research coordinators, and the Office of Research, the Department of Neurology is now tracking patients for the majority of its active studies through UM’s enterprise deployment of Velos eResearch. Velos makes it easier to streamline patient status & visit tracking. It moves this information from a paper-based, non-standardized process, to a consistent, online tracking mechanism. Velos is also a central repository for reporting, providing a fast and effective way for the department to understand its active and on-going portfolio of clinical research. As new studies are initiated through the CRIS office, they are being entered into Velos, speeding up Neurology’s study start-up process. According to Dr. Sacco, “Using Velos is going to help us scale up our clinical research operations and improve efficiency. It gives us a common way to track our progress in bringing investigational therapies to our patients.”

50th Electronic Proposal Submitted to NIH via InfoEd
Mar. 19, 2008 – UM has submitted its 50th NIH proposal electronically through InfoEd since the capability became available last June. InfoEd pre-fills NIH forms saving investigators and administrators time, especially as deadlines approach. It also provides budget building capability pre-configured with university rates to make budgeting simpler. As an alternative to submitting through PureEdge to Grants.gov, 14 different departments and over 35 different PIs have submitted their proposals through InfoEd. Since last fall over 220 users have been trained to use the system across the university. On-going training opportunities are being held on a regular basis. Contact 305-243-2314 with any questions.
