Women’s Cancer League Developmental Grant Program 2010-11 Awardees Announced

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has presented the 2010 Sylvester Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute Women’s Cancer League Developmental Grant Program Awards to three scientists to support their promising research in breast and ovarian cancer.

The awards were presented to: Ram Datar, Ph.D., research associate professor in the Department of Pathology for the “Development of a Novel Separable Bi-layer Microfilter Device to Capture Viable Circulating Tumor Cells (CTC) in Breast and Ovarian Cancer Patient Blood;” Vineet Gupta, Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, for her work on “Enhancing Tumor Response to Radio-Ablative Therapy with Novel CD11b/CD18 Agonists;” and Marta Torroella, Ph.D., research assistant professor of microbiology and immunology working on “The Role of Adipose Tissue, Macrophages and Estrogen in Breast Cancer Prognosis in African Americans and Latinas: A Preliminary Study.” The researchers will receive one-year developmental grants of $50,000 for operating expenses, equipment and laboratory supplies.
