University of Miami Hospital Earns Designation as Blue Distinction Center for Quality

University of Miami Hospital has been designated a Blue Distinction Center for quality in knee and hip replacement.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield awards the national designation, part of the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program, to medical facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care. Designations also serve as a consumer aid in choosing high-performing hospitals.

Dan Snyder, Chief Executive Officer of UMH, credited hospital staff for earning the distinction with their dedication.

“The commitment of our amazing nurses, physicians, administrators and staff is comparable to none,” Snyder said. “This distinction further validates the exceptional patient care we provide at UMH every day and our remarkable progress in becoming a top-tier academic hospital.”

The selection criteria, developed with input from the medical community, expert panels and medical organizations, include a review of national quality and safety initiatives, as well as general and program-specific quality and safety metrics.

According to research by Florida Blue, Florida’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield company, the newly designated distinction centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions.

“We are proud to be recognized by Florida Blue as a partner who provides the highest quality care with systematic outcome measurements for patients with hip and knee replacement surgeries,” Michaela Schneiderbauer, M.D., assistant professor of clinical orthopaedics, and Raymond Robinson, M.D., associate professor of orthopaedics, said in a joint statement.

“We have been shown to be able to comply with their high standards even with a significant proportion of our patients requiring complex revision surgeries with severe comorbidities. All this is only possible in a setting where strong interdisciplinary teamwork, including preoperative assessment (UPAC), OR staff, hospitalists, internists, intensivists, infectious disease specialists, case managers, nurses, administrators, are present. We are thankful for everyone here at UM who contributed to this recognition by Florida Blue as a quality team for hip and knee replacement surgeries.”
