UM Medical Alumni Association Launches Inaugural ‘Stethoscopes for Students’ Program
The stethoscope is one of the most enduring symbols of the medical profession. To the patient, it signifies trust, compassion and hope. For those who have the privilege to wear one, it embodies knowledge, dedication and care.
To help welcome our next generation of physicians, the Medical Alumni Association of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is introducing a new initiative called “Stethoscopes for Students.” The goal of the new program is to provide all incoming medical students in the Class of 2019 with stethoscopes – donated by faculty and alumni.
The stethoscopes will be presented to the M.D. students at their orientation in August by Vicky Egusquiza, M.D. ’87, President of the Medical Alumni Association. The M.D./M.P.H. students will receive theirs the following day.
“I still remember how I felt when I received my first stethoscope,” said Egusquiza. “It was given to me by my uncle, who was a physician, and it was one of the first tangible signs that my dream of becoming a physician was coming true.”
The MAA is inviting all alumni and faculty to donate $250 to provide a Miller School-branded stethoscope to each of the incoming students. Each stethoscope will be accompanied by a note from the faculty or alumni who purchased it.
For the doctor-to-be, the gift will not only alleviate the cost of a necessary but expensive tool, it will also serve as a welcome to the Miller School family.
“It is the hope that ‘Stethoscopes for Students’ at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will become a treasured, annual tradition with the alumni and faculty serving as the cornerstone,” said Alex J. Mechaber, M.D. ’94, professor of medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education. “This much-used tool of the medical profession will be a continual reminder that an alumni or faculty member from our school made an investment on the student’s behalf.”
Any funding over and above the purchase cost of the stethoscopes for this year’s graduating class will be placed into an account to cover the cost of the current or future classes’ stethoscopes.
