UHealth Fitness & Wellness Center Kicks Off 10th Anniversary Celebration

The UHealth Fitness & Wellness Center is kicking off its 10th anniversary celebration this week, with a month-long series of giveaways, fitness challenges, workshops and seminars.

“Throughout the decade, we have collaborated with numerous researchers, physicians, and clinicians to weave the UHealth Fitness & Wellness Center into the fabric of the University of Miami Health System,” said Scott R. Levin, executive director of the Department of Wellness and Recreation. “Through our holistic approach to fitness and wellness, our facility is at the forefront of the ‘exercise as medicine’ movement taking hold across the country.”

Located on floors 12 and 13 above the Don Soffer Clinical Research Center garage, the facility opened on October 3, 2006, with a spacious two-level fitness floor and four multi-purpose group exercise rooms, including a studio cycling room and one classroom dedicated solely to yoga and Pilates.

“Since then we have added more options for members such as personal training, a self-guided workout program for beginners called EZFit, and our popular Workout of the Week,” said Catherine Bernath, director of business operations. “We also have a fitness lab where we conduct a variety of assessments, and one of the top aqua therapy pools in Miami. We also now receive patient referrals from UChart and steer patients into the appropriate program designed specifically to meet their needs. Since our opening, we have had more than 1.1 million check-ins!”

For its 10th anniversary, the UHealth Fitness & Wellness Center will have product giveaways, healthy snack days, and fun surprises for members, with new activities announced every week. “There will be something special almost every day of the month,” said Bernath. “We are also awarding Well ’Canes points (for 2017) to UM employees who join in October (50 points) or attend a class or event inside the facility (25 points each, maximum 50 points).”

Special activities planned this week include:

• Wednesday, October 5: “Walking Wednesdays Challenge” begins

• Thursday, October 6: “Mindfulness for Peace” with Peter at 5:30 p.m.

• Group fitness classes — Earn Well ’Canes Points for each class this month.

“We want our members to look forward to coming to our center each day — before work, during lunch, or after work while everyone else sits in traffic,” said Bernath. “We strive to provide every member with a safe, effective, and fun workout.”
