Sylvester Leadership Presents Award to State Senator Anitere Flores
The quarterly Sylvester Board of Governors meeting held Wednesday, June 5, featured a special guest, State Senator Anitere Flores. The lawmaker was recognized for her critical leadership and support during the recent legislative session in Tallahassee, where $10.3 million in appropriations in the state budget was allocated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The budget was adopted by the Florida Legislature and signed by Governor Rick Scott last month. Senator Flores was key to ensuring that funding made its way to the cancer center, where the money is used to develop new treatments and attract key researchers. This year’s appropriation was an increase of $3 million over last year’s funding.
Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., Director of Sylvester, thanked Flores for being an ally in the fight against cancer and presented her with a plaque and engraved crystal vase that read, “For your passion, leadership and commitment to our shared mission, which is serving to transform our cancer center and our community.”
In accepting the award, Flores, who represents District 38, said Sylvester embodied what all cancer centers should be. She said the goal is to make Florida a destination for superb cancer care, but she hoped “there will be a day when cancer does not touch the lives of everyone, as it does today.”
Miller School of Medicine Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., also expressed his sincere gratitude to Flores for her “leadership and commitment” and said the additional funding is “necessary to develop life-saving treatment.”
Flores pledged to bring more funding and recognition to the doctors, nurses and staff at the cancer center. “We continue to work to make the Sylvester name shine across the country.”
