OB/GYN Kicks Off Summer with Annual Scholars Program
During a June 14 breakfast at the Clinical Research Building, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology welcomed 11 students to its annual Summer Scholars program. Now in its fifth year, the program admits high school, undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in women’s health.
The goal of the program is to immerse students in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology by assigning them to a faculty mentor, whom they shadow for seven weeks. Students have the opportunity to observe physicians on the labor and delivery floor at Jackson Memorial Hospital and in the operating room at University of Miami Hospital.
Second-year medical students Janki Amin, Kathryn Flavin, Elizabeth Patberg, Lauren Reece and Marc Sherwin, and Brian Galea, a UM undergrad, will be working with, respectively, Christopher Estes, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Amanda Richards-Bullock, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Leo B. Twiggs, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Karen Tang, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, John P. Diaz, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and George Attia, M.D., director of the University of Miami Infertility Center and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology.
Ester Avero, a pre-med student at Boston University, Ali Byrne, an undergraduate student at Vanderbilt University, Manage Vincent, a graduate student at Barry University, Niesia Williams, an undergraduate student at Broward Community College, and high school student Merlyen Mesidor from Miami Northwestern High School, are also participating in the program.
