New Pediatric Center Brings Expanded Service to South Dade Families

A newly opened outpatient facility in Deering Plaza is providing South Dade families with direct, convenient access to UHealth pediatric specialists. UHealth Pediatric Specialists South, located in an office building adjacent to Jackson South Community Hospital, serves patients from newborns to age 21.

The facility features 13 examination rooms, as well as dedicated meeting areas where patients can confer with physicians. Pediatric specialties offered include surgery, cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, gastroenterology and endocrinology, with additional specialties to be added. Many of these specialties were previously located at UHealth at Kendall; others are now available because the new facility is larger.

“University of Miami pediatric specialists have moved to the Jackson South location so that kids can get the care they need, parents have more convenience and general pediatricians can team up with the U,” said Judy Schaechter, M.D., associate professor and Interim Chair of Pediatrics. “The move farther south also allows us to reach a larger population base.”

“This is a specialty facility, not a general pediatrics or primary care facility,” said Eugene R. Hershorin, M.D., professor of clinical pediatrics and its medical director. “Our goal is to have a beautiful, well-run facility in South Dade with world-class doctors in every pediatric subspecialty so local pediatricians can refer their patients. For families living in that part of the county, it’s right in their back yard.

“Jackson South has committed to providing support systems, such as imaging, so patients no longer have to leave their communities. Now we have the space and the support systems to provide exceptional care.”

There has already been strong, positive response to the new facility.

“Large pediatric groups, in particular, have shown interest,” said Hershorin. “Patient satisfaction is through the roof, and physicians are very happy with the new facility, too. The numbers are much better than our original projections.”

In fact, Luis Jimenez, Director of Satellite Clinics, who oversees the facility’s business operations, reports the number of patient visits more than doubled in the first three months of operation. Pediatric surgery was the largest-volume specialty, representing 45 percent of patient visits.

“More than 40 percent are new patients,” he said. “With the additional space, we have been able to expand the specialists’ schedules, and we have much more scheduling flexibility as the number of patients continues to grow.”

UHealth Pediatric Specialists South is located at 9380 SW 150th Street, Suite 290B (second floor), convenient to public transportation. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information and appointments call 305-689-UKID (8543).
