New Executive Director Named at John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics

Susan Halloran Blanton, Ph.D., has been named Executive Director of the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics at the Miller School.

The primary function of this new role is to support Margaret A. Pericak-Vance, Ph.D., Institute Director, in implementing the Institute’s integrated strategic and financial plan, which includes research, talent development and recruitment. Blanton will report to Pericak-Vance, whose efforts will concentrate on the scientific direction of the institute. She also will report to Jack Lord, M.D., Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Medical Administration.

In her new role, Blanton, who is an associate professor in the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics, will assist in administrative matters and focus on promoting campus-wide research collaborations with the Hussman Institute.

Blanton has been involved in research focused on the mapping of genes for Mendelian and complex diseases for nearly three decades. She has studied the genetics of a variety of diseases and conditions that include deafness, retinal diseases, skeletal dysplasias, stroke and its risk factors, cleft lip/palate, and clubfoot, and has identified the genes for over 20 genetic disorders. She also serves as Associate Director, Communications and Compliance at the Institute.
