Nanette Vega Honored for Work with Miller School Office of Diversity and Inclusion

Nanette Vega, executive director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was honored recently with the NASPA FL 2018 Mid-Level Professional of the Year Award.

The award was presented by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the leading association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession, with more than 15,000 members at 2,100 campuses in 15 countries. The award recognizes the contributions of mid-level professional members who are transforming higher education through outstanding programs, innovative services and effective administration.

“I’m very proud to receive this award, because I believe in NASPA and am very active in the organization,” Vega said. “More importantly, however, it recognizes the hard work that all of us in our office do every day to ensure that the Miller School is a national leader in diversity and inclusion.”

Nominees must have five-plus years of experience in the field of student affairs at an institution within the state of Florida, and must offer an exemplary array of programs, initiatives, and outreach.

Vega, who has served as executive director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion since its inception in 2014, received the award at the NASPA FL Conference, held November 29-30 in Orlando. She also serves on the NASPA FL board of directors as the Case Study Competition Coordinator.

Vega was previously recognized with a Diversity Visionary Award, presented by Insight Into Diversity, for her “vision, dedication, and long-term commitment to diversity and inclusion.” And, thanks to her work with Stephen Symes, M.D., associate dean for diversity and inclusion, the Miller School also was just named a winner of Insight Into Diversity’s Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.
