Miller School Students Help Overtown Get Back to School

With the success of the first-ever Cabaret showcase still fresh on their minds, Miller School students partnered with the Overtown Community Optimist Club to distribute essential school supplies to more than 500 Overtown students at Gibson Park during the August 18 weekend.

The Class of 2015 Student Government helped fund the back-to-school event by selling gently used lab equipment to first-year students, raising $2,800 and donating half to purchase much-needed school supplies.

These efforts build upon the Miller School’s growing relationship with and dedication to the Overtown community, particularly through programs such as the Jay Weiss Center for Social Medicine and Health Equity’s Community Wellness Coalition.

Held April 13th at the Manuel Artime Theater in Little Havana, the Cabaret featured originally choreographed performances by M.D., M.D./M.P.H., and M.P.H. students and faculty and raised $2,300, a portion of which was used to start a drama club for the Overtown Optimists youth program at Gibson Park.
