“Meet the Docs” Series Tackles Melanoma
James M. Grichnik, M.D., Ph.D., professor of dermatology and cutaneous surgery, presented “Being Sun Safe” at the Coral Gables Youth Center on the evening of June 6. His presentation was fourth in the “Meet the Docs” series featuring UHealth physicians speaking on health and wellness topics in Coral Gables venues.
An expert in the early detection of melanoma and Director of the Melanoma Program at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Grichnik stressed the importance of sun protection and skin cancer screening as many cancers can be treated successfully if identified early. He encouraged patients to be diligent in examining their skin and noticing any changes in mole size or color. As Director of the world-class Surveillance and Detection Clinic, he and his team utilize imaging technologies such as total body photography, dermoscopy, and confocal microscopy to allow for melanoma detection at an earlier, more curable stage.
Grichnik also spoke about current research into therapies that may inhibit melanoma growth and better identify moles which may be malignant.
