Join Sylvester in Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As South Florida and the nation prepare to mark breast cancer awareness month, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will have a substantial presence across the community, raising awareness about the groundbreaking research and clinical care taking place at the cancer center’s Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute. Sylvester is South Florida’s only Cancer Center of Excellence, as designated by the state of Florida, where physician-researchers work to discover, develop and deliver the most targeted treatments for each patient’s cancer. From lectures and mammograms, to walks, runs and a signature football game, all employees and their families are invited to take part and show their support for Sylvester patients, survivors, physicians, researchers, nurses and everyone else affected by breast cancer.

Here are just some of the events taking place in October:

October 3 through 31 – American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks

Join your colleagues to represent Sylvester at one of the largest breast cancer awareness events in South Florida. Invite your family, friends and coworkers to raise awareness, support physicians and researchers, salute survivors and honor those who have fought the battle. This year, Team Sylvester will be present in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, providing several opportunities to participate:

October 4 – Rock N Run 5K

For those who enjoy music and running, the Rock N Run 5K will be held in Pinecrest. For the first time, Sylvester will serve as the presenting sponsor of the 5K benefitting breast and ovarian cancer research. Everyone interested in participating can register online.

October 17 – Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure

One of the most popular breast cancer events in the nation, Susan B. Komen’s Race for the Cure, is marking its 20th anniversary. Sylvester is an impact sponsor of the 5K race/walk that will wash downtown Miami in a wave of pink, as thousands gather to raise awareness and research money, while saluting breast cancer survivors. Sylvester will also sponsor the special “power of 20” VIP tent and several physician-researchers will be on hand for this signature event. To register or learn more, click here.

October 17 – “The Pink Game” – University of Miami vs. Virginia Tech

The University of Miami Hurricanes will take on Virginia Tech in the “Pink Game” at Sun Life Stadium, where Sylvester will take over the Fan Zone and guests will receive special giveaways. There will be special messages on the Jumbotron, the UM band and cheerleaders will also show their support for breast cancer awareness, and guests will get a pre-game surprise. Sylvester physicians will also participate in halftime interviews about the research being done at the cancer center to devise individualized treatments for each patient. The Pink Game is the UM employee game so keep an eye out for messages on where to pick up tickets on all campuses.
