Hand Sanitizing Highlights National Patient Safety Awareness Week at Bascom Palmer
In its ongoing commitment to patient safety, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute held several events during National Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 14-18. The Patient Safety Committee collaborated with a Patient Safety Awareness Week task force led by Marilyn Costache, Associate Medical Risk Officer, with site leadership by Aida Grana, Director of Business Operations, to plan events for this week.
The events included lectures, booth and poster displays, educational classes and simulation activity labs. One of the most memorable was a visit from Bascom Palmer’s costumed Hand Sanitizer Champion, who traveled through surgical and clinical areas, offering hand sanitizer to patients, families and staff while announcing, “Hand sanitizer for your safety!”
Among those visited were Harry W. Flynn, Jr., M.D., Chair of Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital’s Infection Control Committee, Eduardo Alfonso, M.D., Chairman of Bascom Palmer, Steven I. Gayer, M.D., M.B.A., professor of anesthesiology, and Michael Gittelman, Executive Hospital Administrator of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital.
“The clinic and surgery area visits were a hit!” said Joanne Martin, Chief Operations Officer. “Employees and faculty were happy, laughing and trying to guess who was inside the costume. The patient reactions were also positive, and 99 percent accepted a pump of hand sanitizer gel.”
