Idea 2 Innovation Series: “What’s the Big Deal with Patents?”

UM’s Intellectual Property Strategy and Licensing office will host the first lecture in the Idea 2 Innovation Series on Tuesday, March 27, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fifth-floor auditorium.

Renowned intellectual property attorney Bonnie Weiss McLeod, J.D., Ph.D., from the law firm Cooley LLP, will present “What’s the Big Deal with Patents?” Dr. McLeod, a former patent examiner in the biotechnology group of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, specializes in developing and maintaining patent strategy for nonprofit organizations and small to mid-sized biotech companies. In her lecture, she will demystify the elusive world of patents for researchers who are ready to take their work from the laboratory to the market. She will discuss patentable subject matter, the attributes of a patent, qualities that determine inventorship, the patent prosecution process, and advantages and limitations of patent protection.

Light refreshments will be served. For more information and to RSVP, contact Sharon Starkes at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
