Dr. Stephen Nimer Receives Humanitarian of the Year Award

The Life Raft Group has named Stephen Nimer, M.D., Director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, its Humanitarian of the Year. Dr. Nimer was presented the award at the 7th anniversary of the biennial Life Fest convention, a unique event where hundreds of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) patients and caregivers gather for a weekend of camaraderie and unprecedented access to global medical leaders. Many GIST patients who sought treatment at Sylvester were on hand to celebrate Nimer’s recognition.

GIST is a rare type of sarcoma that begins in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, growing from connective or supportive tissues within the body. GIST affects about 5,000 new patients each year.

Nimer was selected to receive the Humanitarian of the Year Award because of his longstanding support of research in rare diseases, his decades of dedication providing compassionate care for patients in the rare disease community and his own research and volunteer efforts to serve this community. Additionally, Life Raft says that Nimer was singled out because of Sylvester’s efforts over the past several years to become one of the top GIST centers of excellence.

“I would like to thank the Life Raft Group for honoring me with this award,” said Nimer. “It is especially meaningful to me because this award recognizes the outstanding level of care that we provide GIST patients at Sylvester. Our effort to better understand, treat and raise awareness of this rare form of cancer is changing lives.”

Nimer and Sylvester’s ongoing involvement with GIST initiatives is breaking down barriers to funding, research, diagnoses and treatment. In the past year, Sylvester participated in Life Raft’s 1st Annual GIST Awareness Day and the GIST Day of Learning, both events that helped raise awareness among the general public.
