Dr. Hilit Mechaber Honored for Contributions to Women in Medicine
Hilit Mechaber, M.D., Associate Dean for Student Services, was honored at the 43rd University of Miami Women’s Commission Annual Breakfast, where she received the May A. Brunson Award, which is named in honor of UM’s second dean of women, who served the University from 1946 to 1970.
Presented March 6, the award is given annually to a UM administrator, faculty or staff member who has made an outstanding contribution to improve the status of women at the University.
An advocate, counselor, and mentor for hundreds of medical students, Mechaber takes great pride in helping them develop careers as they move toward residencies.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by my peers,” said Mechaber. “I am humbled, particularly given the amazing women who are the true pioneers and paved the way for so many of us to be successful.”
Since 2008, Mechaber also has served as Chair of the Miller School’s Women in Academic Medicine and AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science representative.
The Miller School’s Marilyn K. Glassberg, M.D., professor of medicine and surgery, was a nominee for the Brunson Award, and fourth-year medical student Marissa Orenstein was nominated for the Women’s Commission’s Louise P. Mills Award, which is given to a student who exhibits “leadership, creativity, caring and high academic performance.”
