Dr. Chris Alabiad Named Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Miller School
Chris Alabiad, M.D., has been appointed Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
“I am honored to be selected to work with these students, the future of medicine,” said Alabiad, assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology. “I look forward to being part of a team that enhances the medical education experience and allows our students to realize their full potential.”
Alabiad is replacing Robert Irwin, M.D., who was recently named Interim Chair for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In his new role, Alabiad will oversee student policies, procedures and grading, while providing advice and support to Miller School medical students.
“Dr. Alabiad has a deep commitment to medical education,” said Alex J. Mechaber, M.D., professor of medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education. “For the past few years, he has been mentoring medical students interested in ophthalmology, and helping them achieve matches with leading residency programs. He has an exceptional skill set to bring to our medical education team.”
A board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as orbital surgery and oncology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Alabiad earned his medical degree at the University of Miami. He completed residencies at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, as well as a fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Ana E. Campo, M.D., Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Director of Medical Student Education for Psychiatry, said Alabiad has been a strong student advocate for many years.
“He has done a terrific job with our senior medical students who pursue a career in ophthalmology,” she said. “I’m excited that he will now join our team and continue to advise all students in a variety of ways. Our students are truly fortunate to have such a talented and compassionate physician join our medical education team.”
