Clinical Research Center Appoints Director of Nursing for New Research Facility at UMH

The Clinical Research Center and University of Miami Hospital are establishing a research unit to support outpatient and overnight and multi-day inpatient visits for clinical study participants at the University’s flagship hospital, and have appointed a director of nursing to lead it.

The new UMH site will expand the Clinical Research Center’s ability to study broader segments of the population and support more complex studies. The collaboration represents important advances for clinical research at the University and will be a major milestone for the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), which was established last year with a $20 million NIH grant to more quickly turn scientific discoveries that can help patients into practical solutions and treatments.

A formal launch will be announced in the coming months, and future updates will provide details on dates, locations and transition plans for existing studies. In the meantime, if you are a researcher planning a future study, you may consider including an inpatient component.

Deborah Fleming, M.S., R.N., AOCN, who brings a wealth of clinical and research nursing experience, most recently at the Comprehensive Treatment Unit at UMHC, will serve as Director of Nursing for the integrated center. In her new role, Fleming will serve in both clinical and administrative capacities as she works to improve data collection quality, and maintain participant safety and the highest standards of clinical research practice. With extensive experience in implementing clinical research protocols, Fleming also will help investigators and research teams implement efficient, CRC-based studies.

Myles Wolf, M.D., M.M.Sc., Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, the Peggy and Harold Katz Family Chair and Assistant Dean for Translational and Clinical Research, is Director of the Clinical Research Center and Co-Director of the Miami Center for Research Participation and Partnership, a component of the CTSI.
