Make Your United Way Pledge Today and Receive Free Miami Heat Tickets

Still mulling over your support for UM’s United Way campaign? If so, there are a number of enticing offers, including free tickets to see the Miami Heat in action, one-of-a-kind photos of NASA’s retired space shuttle program, and some great raffle and silent auction prizes, that may make it even easier to support charitable and non-profit organizations in our community.

UM employees who make a United Way contribution in person today, Tuesday, October 16, on the medical campus are eligible to receive at least two free tickets to the Heat’s exhibition game against the New Orleans Hornets on October 26. Team UM will be accepting online pledges and distributing the tickets on the Schoninger Research Quadrangle from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Employees who already have made their online pledge also may pick up their Heat tickets on the quad, and pose with the Heat’s championship trophy, which will be on hand for free photo opportunities.

Full- and part-time benefitted employees and temporary employees who pledge at least one percent of their salary will receive four free tickets, and all other employees who pledge will receive two free tickets. Ticket recipients also will receive complimentary vouchers for a hot dog, chips, and soda or water.

Also on the medical campus, the Louis Calder Memorial Library and Suresh A. Atapattu, M.S., a biomedical engineer who conducts cardiology research and development at the International Medicine Institute, are supporting this year’s United Way campaign in a unique way: by offering one-of-a-kind photos of NASA’s now-retired space shuttle program.

Atapattu had unprecedented access and permission to document space shuttle operations at the NASA-Kennedy Space Center where he worked, in conjunction with Buehler Planetarium and Observatory, for more than a decade.

Fifteen of his personal, studio-quality photographs are on display in the library lobby, and can be purchased by private collectors or as gifts for the upcoming holidays. Biomedical Communications will expertly print any of Atapattu’s photos using archival-quality paper and inks for any standard-size frame. All proceeds above the cost of printing will be donated to the United Way.

Prints are $12 per square foot. Other materials, such as tubes and foam board, will be sold at their usual price. The prices and sizes for standard frames are: $27 for a 16×20 frame; $36 for an 18×24; $52 for a 22×28; and $72 for a 24×36.

For a sample of Atapattu’s NASA photos, please visit his photography website.

In addition to the Heat tickets and NASA photos, United Way contributors also have a chance to win some great prizes in two raffles and one silent auction sponsored by various University departments.

The Department of Finance and Treasury’s annual United Way Silent Auction, which runs from October 17 to November 19, is offering prizes that include everything from name-brand electronics to fabulous hotel getaways. The auction is open to University faculty, staff and students, and accepting bids at www.miami.edu/silentauction.

Also to benefit the United Way, the Office of the Registrar is holding a Super Sports Package Raffle. Raffle tickets, which are available in the Office of the Registrar, located in the University Center, room 121, or from any of the office’s staff members, cost $10 each or $25 for three.

Each ticket gives buyers the chance to win a package that includes a Vidao 32-inch LCD flat screen television; four tickets to the UM vs. Virginia Tech football game on November 1; two tickets to the Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks on December 6; and a “Go ’Canes” cooler filled with tailgate/game-viewing snacks and UM gear.

The drawing will be held on Thursday, October 25, at 12:30 p.m. in the University Center breezeway. The winner need not be present. For information on buying tickets from the medical campus, please call Marilin Cabassi at 305-284-9384.

The School of Communication is also holding a raffle to benefit the United Way with three prizes, the first being a Kindle Fire HD, with access to more than 22 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, and popular apps, games, and more.

The second and third prizes are $100 gift certificates to Bangkok City Sushi & Thai Restaurant and to the Melting Pot Restaurant.

Tickets, which are being sold for a suggested donation of $5 for one or $10 for three, are available in the School of Communication Reception Office, room 3050. For information on buying them from the medical campus, contact Ivette Yee at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 305-248-6748.

One ticket makes you eligible for all three prizes. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. on November 12 and notified by email.
