Annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture and Cancer Research Poster Session
The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami is hosting its 16th Annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture and Cancer Research Poster Session on Friday, May 15. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Lois Pope LIFE Center Apex auditorium with a lecture, “The Application of Integrative Sequencing for Precision Oncology,” by Arul M. Chinnaiyan, M.D., Ph.D., a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, American Cancer Society Research Professor, and S.P. Hicks Endowed Professor of Pathology and Urology at the University of Michigan. The lecture is named for the event’s founder Charles Gordon Zubrod, M.D.
Chinnaiyan’s research has focused on functional genomic and bioinformatics approaches to study cancer for the purposes of understanding cancer biology as well as to discover clinical biomarkers. His team has characterized a number of important biomarkers of prostate cancer including AMACR, EZH2, the sarcosine metabolite, and most recently the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) Schlap1. His landmark study thus far is the discovery of TMPRSS2-ETS gene fusions in prostate cancer. This finding potentially redefines the molecular basis of prostate cancer as well as other common epithelial cancers.
The event also will feature a poster session from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Schoninger Quadrangle. Awards will be announced at 4:30 p.m. The categories are: clinical research, basic science research, translational research and population-based research. Additional resources also will be on display. For more information, click here or contact the Sylvester Office of Education and Training at 305-243-2287.
