Miller School Chair Selected for National Leadership Program

Sylvia Daunert, Ph.D., Pharm.D., M.S., professor and Lucille P. Markey Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Miller School, has been accepted into the 2011-12 class of the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Daunert is in the 17th class for ELAM, the only national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for leadership roles at academic health centers. She was nominated by Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and CEO of UHealth – University of Miami Health System, Sheri Keitz, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Associate Vice President for Human Resources at the Miller School and UHealth, and other colleagues.

Dr. William O’Neill to Present “Innovations in Cardiology” at Tonight’s Collegetown Lecture

William O’Neill, M.D., executive dean for clinical affairs and chief medical officer of UHealth, will present a special lecture, “Innovations in Cardiology,” tonight, Tuesday, June 7, as part of the Collegetown initiative to enrich the local community with intellectual discourse and presentations by faculty experts.

The presentation will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the Coral Gables campus at the Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center, 6200 San Amaro Drive. Self parking is available. General Faculty Meeting Reviews Challenging but Successful Year

Focused leadership, coupled with hard work and dedication from faculty and staff, made last year a successful one for UHealth and the Miller School. Numerous examples of achievement—such as the Miller School’s rise to No. 45 in the U.S. News & World Report national rankings—were highlighted at the May 24 annual General Faculty Meeting by Miller School Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., UM President Donna E. Shalala and Provost Thomas LeBlanc.

“It was a challenging year and I really appreciate the work you invested,” Dean Goldschmidt told the faculty.

UM Pediatrics’ Debbie School Receives $35,000 Donation

The Department of Pediatrics’ Debbie School at the Mailman Center for Child Development received a generous $35,000 donation to help put the finishing touches on the dream playground school volunteers built last summer with the Kaboom! organization. The check was presented May 20 by Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Sharon Fallick, director of development, and Joan Bender, vice president of development.

Debbie School faculty, staff and students were elated to receive the donation for the installation of an artificial grass surface, which will make the 2,500-square-foot play area even safer for kids with disabilities.

2011 Hurricane Season Begins June 1 – Download Your Copy of Hurricane Update Now

June 1 marks the beginning of the 2011 hurricane season, and now is the time to prepare for potential storms. Please make sure your contact and emergency information is correct by updating your profile on MyUM. When a situation warrants, mass emails containing emergency information will be sent in addition to voice and text message sent via the Emergency Notification Network.

Parking Lot Closes June 1

Effective Wednesday, June 1, the unpaved old bank lot at the northwest corner of NW 14th Street and NW 11th Avenue will be closed to all vehicles except those parked by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center valet attendants.

If you have been parking in the lot, including after hours or on weekends, you will need to make other parking arrangements before June 1. To purchase monthly or daily parking at other garages or lots, please visit the Security, Parking and ID Office in Dominion Parking Garage, suite 145, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
