Two Miller School Physicians Honored at AHA Heart and Stroke Ball

The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association celebrated “A Gift of Time” at the 2011 Miami Heart and Stroke Ball this month by recognizing two Miller School faculty members – Eugene J. Sayfie, M.D., and Jose G. Romano, M.D. – for their tireless commitment to building healthier lives in South Florida.

Dr. Sayfie, professor of medicine and a past president of the American Heart Association (AHA) of Greater Miami and a past ball chairman, was honored with the Sanford L. and Dolores Ziff Big Heart Humanitarian Award, which recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to society.

Stem Cell Researchers at UM Embark on New Trial

Stem cell researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute are preparing to embark on another research milestone. Joshua M. Hare, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI), has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin the first clinical trial in the nation comparing autologous stem cells.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Celebrates 23rd Palm Beach Friends Luncheon

More than 200 guests attended Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Palm Beach Friends Medical Forum and Luncheon at the Mar-a-Lago Club, where Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., professor and chair of ophthalmology, welcomed the attendees and shared some of the Institute’s most recent research efforts and medical highlights.

Philip J. Rosenfeld, M.D., professor of ophthalmology, delivered the keynote address on Bascom Palmer’s leading role in drug research for the treatment of the wet form of age-related macular degeneration.

Annual Performance Evaluations Due This Month

All employees must receive their annual performance evaluations before April 29 as supervisors must submit completed evaluations to their departmental human resources representatives and managers by April 29. All performance evaluation ratings must be entered into DHRS by HR representatives and managers no later than May 2.
