President Shalala Regales Students with Her Advice and Insights

To understand why so many Americans have no health insurance, UM President Donna E. Shalala encouraged first-year medical students to incorporate one of her habits into their lives: Ask every service-provider you meet what kind of insurance they have.

The answers, Shalala assured the students during one of her popular annual lectures at the Miller School last week, will illuminate why President Obama spent so much political capital extending coverage to most Americans in the new health care reform legislation that Republicans now vow to repeal.

Miller School’s Dr. Richard Thurer to Receive James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award

Richard J. Thurer, M.D., the B and Donald Carlin Professor of Thoracic Surgical Oncology, is the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Faculty Senate James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award.

Established on the 25th anniversary of the Faculty Charter, the annual award was established by the Faculty Senate to recognize extraordinary service. Each year, faculty members are invited to nominate an exemplary member of the University community. With a recommendation from the General Welfare Committee, the recipient is then selected by the Faculty Senate.

New Food Service Cart Debuts on Medical Campus

Looking for a new option for a quick breakfast or tasty lunch? Now, you can look for the new “Outtakes” food cart from food service provider Morrison that will debut on campus on Monday, December 6. For breakfast, the cart carries an assortment of freshly baked bagels and Latin pastries, cereal, coffee and coffee-based drinks, and other items. Lunch-goers can choose from an array of healthy wraps and salads.

Best of all, the food cart travels! Look for it at the Fred Cowell Mall at Louis Calder Memorial Library, the Schoninger Research Quadrangle or the Mailman Center for Child Development.
